THE Wolves men will be looking to enter the playoffs on a winning note and the women are hunting a top-four finish in the last round of the State Basketball League.
The teams meet Stirling away this weekend after the men had a surprise 103-99 loss and the women had a 58-50 win against Perth Redbacks at home last Saturday.Despite the loss, it was an entertaining men’s game for Wolves fans as they sat among Wildcats coaching staff to witness NBL teammates Brad Robbins and Jesse Wagstaff go head to head.
But it was more a case of ‘knee to head’ for Wanneroo’s Robbins, who emerged misty-eyed from a collision as he dove for a contested ball early in the game.
The Redbacks’ Wagstaff was on hand to help him up, in a similar fashion to the way he helped get Perth up with 29 points and 16 rebounds.
His ninth-placed team more than doubled Wanneroo’s score in the last quarter to sneak into the top-eight playoff series with a four-point win.
Wolves captain Greg Hire did not disappoint Wildcats coaching staff with 23 points and a game-high 22 rebounds.
The women kept their top-four dreams alive with an eight-point win as usual-suspect Rebecca Mercer starred with a game-high 17 points.
Ainsleigh Sanders was among the league’s top 10 for the round in assists (6), turnovers (6) and rebounds (10).
The women need to win against Stirling to make the top four and need either Mandurah Magic or East Perth Eagles to lose both their games.
Tip-off is 6pm at Warwick Leisure Centre.
