Wolves Representatives State U20's Nationals

The Wanneroo Wolves were well represented at the 2010 Basketball Australia U/20 and Ivor Burge National Championships which were held recently in Gawler, South Australia.

Ben Murphy was Wanneroo's only player representative in the WA U/20 Men's team, however Blake Wilhelm was named as a reserve.
The side was coached by former Wanneroo SBL & WABL coach Brad Kidner. He was ably assisted by former Perth Wildcat & current Wanneroo WABL coach Trevor Pugh with the side being managed for the fourth year by Barry Hutchins.
The Men's team finished in 5th spot with a 3 win, 3 loss record, defeating a Hugh Greenwood led Tasmania in the 5/6 playoff game.

Shani Amos, Corry-Lynn Wellsteed, Tahli Raftery and Megan Lee, together with new recruit Alex Kerr were all chosen in the WA Women's team with Shani being named captain of the side.
Former Wanneroo Wolves Championship Captain & current WSBL Assistant Coach Donna Cuperus was the teams Assistant Coach.
The Women's team finished fourth overall after losing the Bronze Medal playoff game to QLD 53-58, a day after pushing Gold Medal winning team South Australia to the brink in a bruising encounter only to go down fighting by 7 points.

What a great effort, 10 Wanneroo people out of 28 representing WA at a National Championships.

Howling with attitude

22/Mar/2011

DON’T be surprised if the Wanneroo Wolves men’s basketball team displays a new toughness and resilience this season.

They are the qualities new coach Ben Ettridge has seen as head coach of the world champion Australian Rollers in the past four years.

“They have to deal with so much adversity to perform at the elite level – I’ll be taking that resilience and toughness and applying it to the Wolves in the State Basketball League,” he said.

“To an SBL player a bad day might be their coffee order wasn’t right – but for them (wheelchair athletes) it’s finding no parking at a shopping centre or other issues of access.”

The Times caught up with Ettridge on the Wolves’ home court at the Joondalup Basketball Stadium last week, ahead of their two victories to start the season at the weekend.

He was leading training for local Rollers squad members Adam Deans, Shaun Norris and Nick Radovich.

Norris and Radovich were practising throwing baskets from the newly-extended three-point line.

The three players are also in pre-season training for the national league with the all-conquering Perth Wheelcats, a multi-premiership winning team coached by Ettridge for six years.

Ettridge returns to the SBL men’s competition after leaving it as a player in 2004.

He was an assistant to Wolves women’s coach Craig Friday last season in a reversal of roles as Friday is his assistant at the helm of the Rollers.

The Wolves beat Perry Lakes Hawks 94-79 on Saturday then backed up with a 90-83 win against the Goldfields Giants on Sunday.

The Wolves women opened their season with an away 71-63 win over Perry Lakes Hawks on Saturday.
